Chardin
and the lure of the ordinary
Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779), born in Paris, rarely left the city. He lived on the Left Bank until, in 1757 Louis XV granted him a studio and living quarters in the Louvre. His beautifully textured paintings depicting kitchen maids, children and domestic activities had little in common with Rococo painting that dominated French art in the 18th century, nevertheless his simple, sensitively handled paintings of ordinary household items found an appreciative audience in his time and accounts for his timeless appeal.
